2010/11 Bowl Season Schedule

2010-ncaa-college-football

It's hard to believe, but yes there are a total of 35 bowl games on the bowl schedule this year. That means that a total of 70 out of the 120 teams in NCAA division 1A football get to go to a bowl game. That is a whopping 58% of teams that get to play a post season game. This would be the equivalent of seeing 18 teams make the playoffs in the NFL (currently they only have 12).

The first thing people will say is "Oh good, they get to go to a bowl game. The players deserve it." While I'm sure that all of the college football players have earned their bowl game, the problem that I have with this is that we are now rewarding mediocrity. Honestly, 3 teams from the Sun Belt conference made a bowl game and Temple is complaining because they weren't the 5th Mid American Conference team to get a bowl game!

There are just way too many bowl games. I say 30 is perfect for a bowl season. That means 50% of the teams make a bowl game. I'm fine with that. Take the worst 5 of these bowl games and eliminate them. Then the NCAA can promote that like they do with Selection Sunday in College Basketball. Which teams on the bubble? And have some of these bowl game lose their affiliation with a conference/conferences. Not all of them, if you didn't finish in the top 4 of your major conference then you wait on the bubble for an at large bid with the other teams.

What this ultimately leads to is a lot more luck being involved in picking the bowl games each year. Have you seen a UTEP play a game this year? Neither have I (sorry UTEP fans). Unless you comb over each team's schedule and pick out the little trends and helpful hints, you wouldn't know who was going to win that Ohio vs Troy game, would you?

I don't mean to pick on the NCAA so much, but I liked the bowl system the way it was about 10 years back at the beginning of the BCS. Here is the schedule for the 2010 NCAA college football bowl season:
